Encaustic Painting
Last night was the last session of an encaustic painting workshop at the Glassell School. Sasha Dela, a CORE Fellow at the MFAH, was the instructor. The green sun is part of the first encaustic painting I made on the first day of class. The other three were made last night.

The photo incorporated into the following painting is an old picture of the beats. I could identify Ginsberg, Ferlingetti, and Richard Brautigan (though he wasn't technically a beat poet, just a crappy poet as far as I recall).

slideshow
So I tried to take better photos of the box things I've been making. Then I put some of them together as a slide show.
I'm calling them tree/houses, because of the branches and boxes, but they are more about the associations of the things assembled, probably. There are a few puns built in, like the chicken and the eggs, a boxer with just one arm, the printed "fragile" on one of the panels with a hole and a branch shoved through it, the candy like an offering to the art gods, etc.
The music is Kaki King.

Defending your art
I'm trying to explain the boxes (in the last post) to some people. I can't find anything to point to that looks like these things, except that

Tree/Houses
I made some things that are kind of like sculpture. There are really five different pieces here and they are designed to be looked at from all sides. But there isn't a place big enough to show them properly in the house. And they are kind of hard to move around. Ingredients are cardboard boxes, gesso, acrylic paint, wire, clay, candy, antique dishes, pecan branches, costume jewelery, cork, glass, fabric, ribbon, plastic knife, and knick-knacks.
There is a sixth that I didn't photograph, which involves putting a large branch in one of those hispanic votive candles that you buy when you're praying for something in particular (in this case, a better job) and filling all the gaps in the branch with used nicorette gum. It's not made out of a box, though, so I didn't include it. It is the beginning of what I will do with all these hundreds of used pieces of nicorette gum.......

Sustenance
The opening of the group show, "Sustenance," was last weekend. I missed it because I had to go to Chicago to try to find a place to live. But Kristy took a photo of the show as soon as she hung the banner, before it opened. The banner is a little floppy but apparently it laid out fine by the time the show opened. That's Kristy's cyanotype on the wall (it's her and her sister), next to it is (on top) Rachel's sock photo that I used as source material for the photo below it of the leg. Hopefully, Kristy will send more installation shots!

First Tuesday
Madeline at HCP gave me a going away present yesterday. It's a tee shirt. Here it is.
This is a reference to a question that a certain kind of annoying photographer asks each and every time there is a public critique at HCP (called First Tuesday - anyone can bring photographs and get a free critique from others who show up).
